GLP-1 Myths, Misconceptions & the Truth: What You Really Need to Know

If there’s one topic generating more confusion, fear, and misinformation than almost anything in the health and longevity world right now, it’s GLP-1 therapies.

You’ve heard the comments:

“Isn’t that cheating?”
“Doesn’t it cause blindness?”
“I heard your stomach stops working.”
“Don’t you have to be on it for life?”
“Isn’t it dangerous?”

 

As someone who has spent nearly three decades in evidence-based nutrition, physiology, and athletic performance, I’m here to tell you: most of what you’re hearing is simply not true.

And more importantly, GLP-1s are not just “weight-loss drugs.” They are naturally occurring peptides with powerful, wide-ranging health benefits.

THE MISUNDERSTOOD

STORY:

This is the part no one is talking about…yet it may be the most important.

As a sports dietitian and physiologist, I work with aging and midlife athletes every single day. Some are runners, triathletes, cyclists, swimmers, strength athletes, and weekend warriors.  Many are former high-performing collegiate and professional athletes who suddenly feel like their bodies just aren’t cooperating anymore. I have been working with many of these athletes for 30+ years and I can tell you-the struggle is real. I was one of those athletes!

These athletes aren’t lazy. They are still doing al the right things. But those things re not working anymore.
They aren’t eating differently.
They didn’t suddenly lose their discipline.

Their biochemistry changed.

Their gut health changed.

Their inflammatory load changed.

The combination of aging, hormonal shifts, stress, poor sleep, cumulative inflammation, and microbiome disruption can create a metabolic bottleneck that no amount of training can out-perform.

Insulin sensitivity drops.

Recovery slows.

MYTH #1: “GLP-1s Are Cheating."

MYTH #3: “They Paralyze the Stomach.”

Nope! GLP-1s slow gastric emptying, exactly as your natural GLP-1 does.
This is reversible, dose-dependent, and part of how hunger regulation works.

Gastroparesis is overwhelmingly linked to long-standing uncontrolled diabetes and patients who had co-morbidities and whom were on high doses for a long time. 


MYTH #4: “You’re On It Forever.”

Not true.
Some people use GLP-1s short-term to reset metabolic pathways.
Some microdose or stay on a maintenance dose.
Some cycle off entirely once the gut, hormones, inflammation, and lifestyle patterns stabilize.

Some transition to other peptides.

It’s individualized and part of an overall wellness plan.
